From Seed to Stem: The Journey of Flowers on Our Farm

Growing flowers is more than just planting seeds and waiting for blooms. On our Macedon Ranges flower farm, every flower’s journey is carefully nurtured from the very beginning. I want to take you behind the scenes and share how we transform tiny seeds into vibrant stems ready for bouquets. Whether you are a florist or a flower lover, understanding this process deepens appreciation for the blooms you hold or arrange.

Starting with Seeds in Our Greenhouse
Our flower farming begins indoors. We use a custom-built greenhouse designed to create the perfect environment for seed germination. Seeds are delicate and need warmth, moisture, and protection from harsh weather. The greenhouse allows us to control temperature and humidity, giving seeds the best chance to sprout strong roots and healthy shoots.
We carefully select seeds based on the season and the varieties we want to grow. Some flowers take longer to germinate, so we stagger planting times to ensure a continuous harvest throughout the season. For example, we start with hardy varieties like sunflowers and zinnias early, while more delicate blooms like sweet peas come later.
Inside the greenhouse, we use seed trays filled with a light, nutrient-rich compost mix. We water gently and monitor daily for signs of growth. This stage requires patience and attention because seedlings are fragile. Once the seedlings develop a few true leaves and strong stems, they are ready to move outside.
Planting Out in the Field
Transplanting seedlings from the greenhouse to the field is a critical step. Our Macedon Ranges flower farm benefits from rich soil and a climate that supports diverse flower types. Before planting, we care for our soil by using No Dig methods (see here). Planting is done by hand to avoid damaging the young plants. After planting, we water the plants thoroughly to help seedlings settle into their new home.

Tending and Caring for Growing Plants
Flower farming is hands-on work. Once the plants are in the field, we spend hours tending to them. This includes:
Pruning and pinching out stems, to encourage bigger, bolder and more beautiful blooms.
Watering regularly, especially during dry spells
Monitoring for pests and diseases and using natural methods to control them (see here for our pest control methods).
Our Macedon Ranges flower farm’s location means we experience cool nights and warm days, which many flowers love. This climate helps produce strong stems and vibrant colours. We adjust our care routines based on the specific needs of each flower variety.
Watching Flowers Bloom
The most rewarding part of flower farming is seeing the buds open into full blooms. This stage requires careful timing. We check the flowers daily to harvest them at their peak, when petals are fresh and colours are vivid.
Harvesting is done early in the morning when temperatures are cooler. We use sharp scissors to cut stems cleanly, leaving enough length for arranging. After cutting, flowers are immediately placed in water to keep them fresh.
Our Macedon Ranges flower farm grows a wide range of flowers, from classic dahlias to wildflowers and native species. Each type has its own bloom time and harvesting technique, which keeps the work varied and interesting.

Sharing the Harvest
Once harvested, flowers are sorted and arranged ready for sale. Flower farming connects us to the community. We love hearing how our flowers brighten homes, weddings, and events. Knowing the journey from seed to stem adds meaning to each of our bouquets.
